Following a vegan diet can be great for your heart
There is a growing body of evidence showing that a vegan diet can improve your heart health and reduce your risk of ever developing heart disease.
Ischemic Heart Disease, also known as Coronary Heart Disease and Coronary Artery Disease, is the single biggest cause of death globally, with about 9 million deaths per year, according to the World Health Organisation [1]. It is caused by narrowed arteries, and can in turn lead to heart attacks. Research has shown that the most important behavioural risk factor for these outcomes is diet [2], and that following a plant-based diet can lower this risk [3]. As well as benefitting heart health generally, a vegan diet will help to reduce systemic inflammation in people already suffering from Ischemic Heart Disease [4]. There is also evidence that eating vegan can help improve cardiovascular fitness.
