Vitamin B12 Deficiency – What Can Happen If You Don't Get Enough?

The consequences of not getting enough Vitamin B12 in your diet can be serious, and can lead to anaemia, pale skin, soreness of the mouth and tongue, neurological issues, blurred vision, depression, weight loss, dementia, and infertility, among other things. These symptoms typically develop slowly, as the body can store a large amount of Vitamin B12, and it can take up to a year or more before such symptoms are identified diagnostically as being caused by a Vitamin B12 deficiency. Young children are particularly vulnerable, as they can suffer the symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency more quickly than adults, and in extreme cases this can lead to coma and death. So it’s crucial that vegans ensure they incorporate a regular and adequate supply of Vitamin B12 in their diet.
